My three teens and the young people I work with often admit that they feel bombarded by outside factors that have a significant impact on the way they think, feel and act.

Here are some examples of the kinds of pressures they encounter:

  • Parents and teachers often apply excessive pressure for them to perform well, which can increase their anxiety levels.
  • Peer pressure is persistent and highly influential. There’s a strong drive for them to people please and fit in just so they can feel they belong.
  • Social media provides a platform for anonymous critics and bullies to target their vulnerabilities.
  • Ads and programming on radio, TV, social media and print clearly lay out the ideal way to look, walk, talk and live, which creates unrealistic standards for them to live up to.
  • Disruptions in family life—such as divorce, illness, and disputes—often fill their minds with uncertainties, resentment and a lack of trust.
  • The teen cultural acceptance of alcohol, drug use and sex places extraordinary pressure on them to participate. They shared stories of fellow teens who abused substances, were affected by sexual abuse, engaged in risky sexual behaviors, confronted with pregnancy, and, as a result, struggled with depression, eating disorders, addictions, and suicidal behavior.

This bombardment on your mind can have a dramatic effect on your self-image, belief systems, and habits. It can have a huge impact on your self-confidence, your perceptions of your capabilities, and the degree of potential and the ultimate success you think you can achieve in all areas of your life. It can also make you feel like you have to hustle for your worthiness rather than being loved and accepted for the authentic, imperfect person you are.

An Important Period of Self Discovery

Yes, the adolescent and young adult years can seem a bit like an emotional roller coaster ride, but they can also be a time of self-discovery and a period where you encounter an increasing awareness of who you want to be and how you want to live your life.

Every young person has unlimited potential to achieve success in all areas of life, but you can’t achieve this alone. It’s the responsibility of your supporters; your caregivers, teachers, coaches, counselors, community leaders, etc; to help you recognize your potential and motivate you to tap into it to fulfill your goals and make your vision of yourself and your life a reality. We initiate the lead, so you will learn to take the lead in your own life.

I am devoted to coaching my teens from the sidelines and providing as much support as required to help them live fulfilling, successful and more connected lives. My blog posts are my way of reaching out to you to support you on your journey from adolescence to adulthood.
